मुख्य कुळ म्हणजे आपण ज्या कुळामध्ये राहतो ते कुळ.
ज्या कुळांमधून आपले कुळ निर्माण झाले ते आपल्या अगोदरच्या असल्यामुळे त्याला मुख्य कुळ असे म्हणतात.
इतिहासामध्ये आपण जर बघायला गेलो तर मराठ्यांचे 96 कुळ आहे सर्व जगामध्ये प्रसिद्ध आहेत, आणि याच ९६ मुख्य कुळांचे पुढं जवळजवळ साडेपाच हजाराच्या वर पोटकुळ तयार झालेले आहेत.
या 96 चे साडेपाच हजार आणि त्यांचे एक एक दोन दोन अजून परत तयार झालेत. असे बरेचसे कुळ तयार झालेत असे ज्यामध्ये 96 कुळी मोरे, राणे, गायकवाड, जाधव, उर्फ यादव, पवार, क्षीरसागर, आहेरराव, महाडिक, खंडागळे, शिर्के, छत्रपती शिवाजी महाराजांचे भोसले इत्यादी
हे मुख्य कुळ आहे परंतु इतिहास जर आपण बघायला गेलो तर बऱ्याच वेळा ही 96 कुळीच फक्त मराठा आहेत असं नाही,
ज्यावेळेस ही यादी बनल्या गेली त्यावेळेस बरेचसे कुळ या यादीमध्ये आलेले नाहीत, त्याचं कारणही असंच आहे ज्यांनी ही सुरुवातीला यादी बनवली त्यांनी कोणतीही चूक केली नाही, त्यांचा काहीही दोष नाही,
संपर्काचे थेट साधन नव्हतं, जाणं-येणं एवढं सोपं नव्हतं आणि त्याकाळी समाज एका एका राज्यामध्ये असा राहत नव्हता, बरेचसे गुळ अर्थात घराणे हे युद्धाच्या सरदारकी, जहागीरदारी, मानमरातब, वतनदार, इत्यादीमुळे महाराष्ट्राच्या बाहेर अगदी संपूर्ण हिंदुस्तान भर लोक राहत होते.
त्यामुळे यादी करणाऱ्या व्यक्तीला या सर्वांच्या बरोबर जाऊन त्याची माहिती घेणे, कदाचित शक्य झाले नसेल म्हणून या 96 कुळांची ही यादी फक्त 96 च आहे, असं नाही म्हणू नका आपल्या अनेकांचे कुळ सुद्धा 96 कुळामध्ये नसतील, परंतु ते मराठाच आहेत यात शंकाही नाही असं आपलं जर कुळ असेल तर आम्हाला संपर्क साधा

There was no direct means of communication, it was not so easy to go and come and go and at that time the society did not live in one state, many guls i.e. families were living outside Maharashtra due to warlordism, jahagirdari, honor, patriotism, etc. Therefore, it may not have been possible for the person who made the list to go along with all of them and get their information, so don’t say that this list of these 96 clans is only 96.
